Idle Train Game v0.2
Idle Train Game » Devlog
I'm excited to announce the first update since I first uploaded this game to Itch.
Here are the release notes with additional info on some of the points that I think you might find noteworthy.
- Finally decided on a title
- My original plan with this game was for it just to be a fun sandbox to build out train tracks, but has essentially changed into an idle game over the life of its development, so the title now reflects that.
- A track can now be placed where another already is, storing the previous track back in the inventory
- It was very annoying to have to delete a track and then place a new one. If you didn't want to crash the train you would typically need to pause the game, remove the desired track, and place the new track. Now you can simply place another track and the track it's taking the place of will be added back into your inventory.
- Consolidated buying and using tracks into a single panel
- Everything is now purchasable and usable in a single panel that slides out. There is a favorites section where the first 10 tracks are mapped to the number keys. The list is reorderable.
- The way of placing tracks previously was by accessing them from a hotbar. Once you had more than 10 tracks this could become cumbersome, especially for rarely used tracks because you would have to open the inventory, drag the track to the hotbar, and then finally use the track. There are some tracks that you might use very rarely but would have to replace something in the hotbar that you use more frequently.
- This would become even more cumbersome when buying a track you need to immediately use, because you would have to first buy it from the store, open the inventory, replace a track in the hotbar, then finally use the track. You can now simply hit "Buy" and then "Use" to place the track.
- Added a speed slider
- You can now speed the game up to 5x the base speed
- Fixed several memory issues that were causing the game to stutter
- Added an options menu
- Created options for sound and graphics quality
- Updated the title screen to be more animated
- The previous title screen was a static screen
- Defaulted the game to build mode instead of spectator mode
- Entering the game now defaults to edit mode. You can still switch over to spectator mode, it just won't start in that mode.
- Changed the play/pause toggle to be a simple button with play/pause icons
- Added a steel bridge track
- Added a few more visuals to the environment
- Camera can now zoom in and out
- Camera now stays within world bounds

In the above screenshot you'll notice the new track menu on the left and the speed slider on the bottom right.
